About Us

The idea of building a malt house germinated in the mind of Alan Stewart, a sixth-generation farmer from Hortonville, Nova Scotia. Alan has been farming and running the province’s oldest certified organic farm, Stewart’s Organic, for more than 30 years. He saw malting as a natural extension of farming; harnessing the natural processes that occur during germination of the seed.

The main ingredients of beer come from the land. At Horton Ridge, it is our goal to maximize the economic value of Atlantic Canadian craft beer to our region by producing malt here.  Malt is mostly made from specific varieties of barley, and at the moment very little is grown here.  We are working with Atlantic Canadian organic farmers to change that.
